A New Cultural Landmark — Museum of West African Art (MOWAA)

The Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) is a contemporary cultural institution located in Benin City, Nigeria, designed as a major hub for the preservation, research, and celebration of West African art and heritage. Founded in 2020, the museum was conceived as a multidisciplinary campus combining exhibition spaces, conservation laboratories, and educational facilities to support both historical and contemporary artistic practice.

Designed to bridge heritage and modern creativity, MOWAA aims to showcase thousands of years of West African artistic expression, from ancient artifacts to contemporary works by African and diaspora artists. The institution has also been central to global conversations around cultural restitution, particularly the Benin Bronzes, positioning itself as an evolving space where history, identity, and contemporary African narratives converge.
