LONDON MAYORAL CANDIDATE VALERIE BROWN ARRESTED AND HELD FOR AN EXTENDED 48 hours on a charge of “conspiracy” BlackNews.UK report’s from Islington Police Station North London Valerie Brown, is being held in custody for what she says is “simply caring our children’s future” The 69 year old black grandmother to nine, is now being held all weekend until a court case on Monday, in the city where we supposedly have no institutional racism. Activist group Burning Pink releaseed an official statement to BlackNews. UK were they are calling for Valerie Brown’s immediate release, and for the public to be informed about how Citizens’ Assemblies can be set up to transform democracy. At 5.30 am this morning police entered the home of Valerie Brown and arrested her, taking her to Islington police station. Valerie was standing for Mayor in order to transfer power to ordinary people using the well tried method of Citizens’ Assemblies. If elected, she would have stood down as Mayor and set up legally binding London wide assemblies, handing power back to Londoners. During the election campaign Valerie has said: "The time of one person leadership is over, it's time for communities to form their own leadership through Assemblies of ordinary people. It takes a community coming together to raise their lives. Through Citizens’ Assemblies ordinary people with different views get to understand each other, making friends where there was mistrust or even hatred before. Given all the facts, people sort out difficult problems. This has happened again and again. “If elected, I will hand over power to Citizens’ Assemblies. The people of London will decide how to run the city. Young people need a future they can look forward to. It’s possible to reduce crime and put an end to poverty. We can respond to the dangers we face from climate change. We can learn from the very best – the best educators, best healthcare, best community organisations." Brown has worked tirelessly day in day out to get this message across, talking to people one on one and leaving them with hope. This is her only crime. And crime it is, in the eyes of those in power, who can see that through Citizens’ Assembly their authority will fall away. Through Citizens’ Assemblies we can make London into a city that values its people, its communities, and values the natural world that sustains us.
