WICKNELL Chivayo, a controversial businessman with strong links with President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has pledged US$3.6 million to all 360 Members of Parliament as an independence celebration “donation.”
Each House of Assembly member and Senator will get US$10,000 for community development with Chivayo revealing that his donation will be handled the same way government’s Constituency Development Fund (CDF) is managed.
He already has Mnangagwa’s approval, according to the controversial tycoon’s post on social media this Saturday.
“I wish to recognise the important role played by our MPs across all political divides, who carry the hopes and aspirations of our people at constituency level,” said Chivayo.
“As a proud and patriotic Zimbabwean who has benefited from the opportunities created under the Second Republic, I believe it is also my duty to contribute towards accelerating development at grassroots level.
“I am therefore very pleased to announce that, following an express approval granted by the principal yesterday on my way to church, I will handover a total of US$3.6 million to the Speaker of Parliament next week in order to distribute it as US$10,000 to each of the 360 MPs and Senators, for use strictly towards constituency development.
“This donation must be utilised exactly the same way as the CDF and must go towards drilling boreholes, completing stalled projects, building community markets and delivering clean water, sanitation or any other essential social services.”
Chivayo is a key member of a faction within Zanu PF publicly backing Mnangagwa’s proposed term extension through Constitutional Amendment Bill Number 3.
With a referendum to determine whether the amendment should sail through increasingly looking unlikely, Parliamentarians might be the ones to pass it.
Added Chivayo: “I am humbly offering to provide this small donation to all MPs and Senators, regardless of political affiliation. Whether from the revolutionary mass party, Zanu PF or from the opposition. This is my special way of celebrating Independence Day with an olive branch extended countrywide for development across all constituencies.
“If any Honourable MP is unwilling to accept this offer, they are at liberty to do so, that’s democracy.
“In such instances however, there will be no harm in me identifying a competent and pro-development individual from your constituency, whether a former MP, a shadow MP, or aspiring leader, who can take up the responsibility of driving this development forward at grassroots level.”
This is the first time ever, that an individual outside of government has funded community development across the entire country, without discrimination based on political affiliation.
