Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced the suspension of the automatic renewal mechanism of a long-standing defence cooperation agreement with Israel, marking a shift in Rome’s position amid escalating regional tensions.
In an official statement, the government said the decision was taken in light of the current situation, and the move was formally communicated to Israel through a letter from the Italian defence minister to his Israeli counterpart.
The bilateral agreement, signed in 2003 and ratified in 2005, established a framework for cooperation in defence industries, joint military training, medical services, and research and development, with a clause allowing automatic renewal every five years.
The decision comes amid growing criticism of Israeli military operations in Lebanon, with Italian authorities expressing concern over their impact, particularly regarding the safety of United Nations peacekeeping personnel and the humanitarian consequences for civilians.
Diplomatic tensions intensified following reports that Israeli forces fired warning shots near a convoy carrying Italian peacekeepers, prompting Rome to summon the Israeli ambassador for clarification.
In a further signal of its stance, Italy’s foreign minister visited Beirut, expressing solidarity with Lebanon and condemning attacks affecting civilian populations.
Israel has downplayed the move, stating that the suspension is unlikely to have a tangible impact on its security and describing the agreement as largely symbolic in recent years.
