Mabuyane to take Malema to court over fake Fort Hare degree claims

Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane says he intends to file a lawsuit against Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema over allegations that he fraudulently obtained a Master’s Degree from the University of Fort Hare in KuGompo City.

Malema made the claims while addressing supporters outside the KuGompo City Regional Court, where he was sentenced to five years in prison.

He has since been granted leave to appeal and released on warning.

Mabuyane’s office has rejected the allegations.

His spokesperson Sonwabo Mbananga says the allegations are false and baseless.

He says “It is deeply irresponsible to paddle misinformation while he himself faces serious legal consequences. South Africa has a democratic constitution, no one is above the law and no one should weaponise falsehoods for political gain”.

“The premier has instructed his legal team to explore appropriate legal action against these defamatory remarks. Premier Mabuyane remains focused on serving the people of the Eastern Cape and will not be distracted by political theatrics”, Mbananga said.

Malema alleged that Mabuyane and other ANC officials hold “fake qualifications” from the University of Fort Hare and called for their arrest.

“You in uniform, go to Oscar Mabuyane’s office and arrest him. That University of Fort Hare, it needs special attention. A lot of ANC people are graduating from that University of Fort Hare and a majority of their qualifications is fake qualifications,” said Malema.

The allegations come amid an ongoing Special Investigating Unit (SIU) probe into the alleged irregular awarding of degrees at the university.
