CONSERVATIVE candidate for mayor of Surrey, Honveer Randhawa, on Wednesday pledged to cut water bills by 50%, saving an average of $1,427 annually for thousands of frustrated Surrey families by fully funding free household water meter installations, allowing Surrey families to switch to the lower metered water bill rate.
“Families are opening their water bills and seeing endless increases with no explanation,” said Randhawa. “The flat-rate bill punishes people who use less water but can’t afford the installation costs to switch to a metered rate. We’re going to fix it by making every eligible household pay only for what they actually use by helping with installation costs.”
“A Conservative Mayor and Council in Surrey City Hall will cut your water bill by 50%, saving each eligible household in Surrey an average of $1,427 per year,” added Randhawa.
If elected, Randhawa will launch a comprehensive city-wide program providing completely free water meter installation to all eligible Surrey households that currently lack one. (Currently, only $400 in rebates is available to cover installation costs).
Every participating household will save an average of $1,467 per year by switching to metered billing instead of the current unfair flat rate. In addition, the free installation program will save families thousands of dollars upfront (depending on the work required) – money they are forced to pay themselves under the City’s current limited pilot program.
“This is common-sense relief Surrey families have been demanding,” Randhawa stated. “No more inflated bills. No more guessing. Just fair, transparent billing based on actual consumption – and we’re making the switch free so every household can benefit immediately.”
The announcement comes as water and sewer rates keep climbing, largely because of the mismanagement of the North Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant. Originally budgeted at $700 million, the project has now ballooned to nearly $4 billion – more than five times the original estimate and years behind schedule.
“The enormous cost overrun is a failure of Metro Vancouver leadership that Surrey residents are being forced to subsidize,” Randhawa said. “Surrey’s Mayors have spent years at Metro Vancouver through their role as Mayor, and things have gotten worse on their watch, not better. We’re done quietly passing billion-dollar mistakes onto families.”
Randhawa’s Plan:
- Deliver free water meter installation to every eligible Surrey household, saving $1,427 per household on water bills
- Move past the outdated flat-rate billing system that overcharges families
- Demand full transparency from Metro Vancouver on massive cost overruns
- Call for independent audits of billion-dollar infrastructure failures
- Give Surrey a strong voice at the regional table instead of passing costs to residents
“Surrey residents aren’t asking for special treatment – they’re asking for fairness, accountability, and lower bills,” said Randhawa. “That starts the day we elect common-sense conservative leadership and take back City Hall in the upcoming municipal election.”
