Belize Fisheries Department donate conservation-themed mural to The Belize Zoo

By Zoila Palma:  World Oceans Day 2026 was celebrated on June 8, 2026 and the Belize Fisheries Department donated a conservation-themed mural to The Belize Zoo as part of its ongoing commitment to public education, environmental stewardship, and marine conservation awareness.

The 2026 UN World Oceans Day theme, “Reimagine: Beyond the world we know, a new relationship with our ocean,” invites us to rethink how we connect with, value, and protect the ocean that sustains us.

“For Belize, this means strengthening our commitment to conserving our marine ecosystems, protecting vulnerable species, and inspiring action for future generations.

As one of Belize’s premier attractions, welcoming both Belizeans and visitors from around the world, The Belize Zoo provides an ideal platform to showcase conservation efforts and share important information about Belize’s marine resources,” the Belize Fisheries Department said.

Painted by Belizean artist Luis Garcia, the artwork features the Greater Caribbean Manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus) – the species represented in the Belize Fisheries Department’s manatee conservation logo. Through this mural, this is transformed into a vibrant educational display that highlights the importance of protecting this vulnerable marine mammal and its habitat.

The Greater Caribbean Manatee is fully protected under the Fisheries Resources Act, No. 7 of 2020, and this artwork serves as an interactive educational tool, incorporating a functional QR code that provides visitors with direct access to information on fisheries regulations, marine protected species, and other educational resources.

Fun Fact: The Belize Zoo holds a special place in Belize’s manatee conservation history, having been the first institution to host and care for a rescued manatee named Woody.

The Department extended its sincere appreciation to The Belize Zoo for providing a space where conservation messages can reach both local and international audiences.

By bringing marine conservation education to a venue visited by thousands each year, this partnership helps foster greater appreciation for Belize’s rich biodiversity and our shared responsibility to protect it.
