*What was supposed to be a patriotic musical celebration of America’s 250th birthday has quickly become a controversy after several well-known artists publicly backed out of the Freedom 250 concert series, saying they believed the event would be nonpartisan.
In less than 48 hours, the lineup for the Great American State Fair concerts went from a showcase featuring recognizable names across multiple genres to a growing list of cancellations and public statements. The rapid exodus shifted attention away from the nation’s upcoming semiquincentennial celebration and onto questions about how the event was presented to performers.
Artists Say the Event Was Not What They Expected
Country music star Martina McBride was among the first artists to publicly explain why she decided to withdraw.
“I was presented with an opportunity to perform at a nonpartisan event, but that turned out to be misleading,” McBride said. “I asked lots of questions and was assured this was a nonpartisan event… yesterday things started changing and what we were told is, in fact, not what is happening.”
Her statement echoed concerns later raised by several other performers.
Rock singer Bret Michaels reached a similar conclusion.
“Unfortunately, what was presented to us as a celebration of our country through music and a chance to honor our veterans, active military, first responders, teachers and hardworking Americans from all walks of life has evolved into something much more divisive than what I agreed to be a part of,” Michaels said.
The Poison frontman also cited threats directed toward himself, his band, crew members and fans, calling them “unfounded and unforgivable.”

A Wave of Withdrawals Followed
Once the controversy became public, additional artists moved quickly to distance themselves from the event.
Young MC said performers were never informed about political involvement when discussions began.
“The artists were never told about any political involvement with the event,” he said. “I hope to perform in D.C. in the near future at an event that is not so politically charged.”
The Commodores also announced they would not participate, stressing that the group does not publicly align itself with political parties.
“Our music has always been our voice and we choose not to publicly affiliate with any single political party. We support the betterment of all Americans,” the group said.
Morris Day likewise shut down reports that he would appear.
“Contrary to rumor, Morris Day & The Time will not be performing at the Great American State Fair,” he wrote on social media. “It’s a no for me.”
Freedom Williams of C+C Music Factory also criticized the event after learning about its political connections, though the group later clarified that it does not formally support any political party.
What Is Freedom 250?
Freedom 250 is a Trump-backed initiative created to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary in 2026. One of its signature attractions is the Great American State Fair, a multi-week event scheduled to take place on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., from June 25 through July 10.
The fair is expected to feature exhibits representing all 50 states, along with historical displays, entertainment and tributes celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Several artists later said they believed they were signing on for that broader patriotic celebration, making the event’s political associations the central issue behind many of the withdrawals.
Freedom 250 operates separately from America250, the bipartisan commission established by Congress to coordinate the nation’s official anniversary activities.
Trump Plans to Stay Front and Center
As the lineup controversy intensified, reports emerged that Trump plans to deliver a speech or rally at the same Washington location during the festivities.
Public attention has increasingly centered on why so many artists chose to leave after initially agreeing to participate.
Who Is Still Performing?
Despite the wave of cancellations, several artists remain committed to the event.
Flo Rida is still listed on the lineup and has not publicly indicated plans to withdraw. Vanilla Ice has defended his participation and pushed back against criticism from detractors. Fab Morvan, known as one half of Milli Vanilli, has also confirmed that he intends to perform.
Whether additional artists remain on board—or decide to follow those who have already left—could shape public perception of Freedom 250 in the weeks ahead.
For many of the performers who withdrew, the issue was not America’s 250th birthday itself. It was whether they had been given a complete picture of the event they were being asked to help celebrate.
As the Great American State Fair approaches, organizers still have time to rebuild momentum. For now, however, the focus remains on the artists who chose to leave.
