Belize City man fined $1,500 after beating motorcyclist following traffic collision

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Twenty-two-year-old Keiron Garbutt was fined $1,500 after pleading guilty to a charge of harm stemming from an altercation following a traffic collision in Belize City.

Garbutt appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he admitted intentionally and unlawfully causing harm to a 46-year-old man on July 30, 2026.

According to the man, he was riding his motorcycle on George Street when a green motorcycle, allegedly driven by Garbutt from the direction of Bishop Street, collided with him at the intersection.

The man reported that when he stopped and questioned Garbutt about the collision, Garbutt got off his motorcycle and punched him in the face. The man further alleged that Garbutt produced a pocket knife and threatened to stab him in the throat.

The man later alerted two police officers in the area and was taken to the Precinct 1 Police Station, where he was issued medico-legal forms. Garbutt was subsequently detained and charged with harm. No charges were brought against either man in relation to the traffic collision.

In mitigation, Garbutt told the court that the complainant had crashed into him, saying he did not understand why the incident had occurred. When questioned by the Magistrate, however, Garbutt acknowledged that he had harmed the complainant and accepted responsibility for his actions.

For his guilty plea, Garbutt was fined $1,500 plus $5 cost of court. He has until November 30, 2026, to pay the fine, or he will serve five months in prison in default.
