The Union Transport Alliance (UTA), an umbrella body representing boda boda riders, taxi operators, bus drivers and truck operators, has launched an e-commerce and digital lending platform aimed at connecting traders, customers and transport operators.
The Union Online Duuka, developed in partnership with RukaPay, allows customers to buy and sell products online while also accessing credit facilities, including school fees loans, stockist loans and business top-ups.
UTA chief executive Fred Ssenoga Bagenda said the platform is intended to respond to changing consumer shopping habits and growing demand for digital services.
Speaking at the launch, Boda Union chairman Frank Mawejje said the platform would create additional income opportunities for boda boda riders by involving them in the delivery of goods purchased through the platform.
Mawejje said the initiative could help reduce riders’ dependence on passenger trips, particularly those who spend long hours waiting at stages for customers.
“These things of sitting on the stage to wait for consumers to come will be over,” Mawejje said.
He said riders could instead take on more delivery jobs as online shopping expands, creating an additional source of income while improving the movement of goods between traders and customers.
The platform brings e-commerce and digital credit services together with the existing transport network, allowing riders to participate in the delivery chain while traders gain access to a wider pool of potential customers.
