At 7 p.m. on May 2 the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront will serve as the venue for the annual gala hosted by Coppin State University.
Last year’s ball focused on 125 years of transformation, celebrating milestones for unwavering commitment to education, innovation and community impact.
Reflecting on the university’s legacy of 126 years, this year’s event promises a sophisticated atmosphere and immersive experience, honoring deep-rooted cultural and historical traditions through a celebratory lens.
“This year’s theme, An Ode to Black Excellence, moves us beyond the traditional gala experience and draws inspiration and pays homage to culturally rich, historic traditions,” said university leadership in information released on the institution’s website. “The evening’s backdrop will offer a refined, elegant and engaging environment to honor and celebrate the prominent figures that continue to push our great institution and community forward.”
Organizers of the ball say the event will offer attendees an opportunity to step “into the luxury and elegance that defined historic Black time periods such as the Harlem Renaissance and debutante society. The room setup will encourage dancing and networking – a nod to the socialization that embodied those eras.”
“Every detail, from tablescapes to florals to lighting, is designed to feel deliberate, timeless and dignified,” said organizers, in information released to the public. “Each element will embody Black excellence at its highest standard.”
To align with the event’s theme and heightened level of elegance, the university has established a strictly enforced black-tie dress code for all guests. The event requires black tuxedos and black formal gowns.
