Antoine Destang started the Junior Pan Pacific Championships on Monday by competing in two events, coming close to his personal best times in both. The 18-year-old, who studies at the University of Michigan, is the only swimmer from Saint Lucia at the UBC Aquatic Centre in Vancouver, Canada.
Destang swam in the preliminary session at 9:00 a.m. PDT (12:00 noon AST). In Event 2, the Men’s 13-18 50m Butterfly, he was seeded 16th with an entry time of 25.16. He finished in 25.02. In Event 6, the 100m Backstroke, he was seeded 28th with a time of 59.99 and placed 25th with a time of 59.32.
Destang has four more events ahead. On Tuesday, August 18, he will compete in the 100m freestyle and 50m backstroke. On Wednesday, he swims the 100m butterfly, and on Thursday, he wraps up with the 50m freestyle preliminaries.
To advance past the morning heats in his remaining events, Destang must match or exceed his entry times against a tough international field. His progress in the opening events suggests he can improve his personal rankings.
The Junior Pan Pacific Championships is a long-course meet for swimmers aged 18 and under from countries around the Pacific. It takes place every other even year when there is no World Championship, with the last event in 2024. The 2026 competition, from August 17 to 20, includes athletes from Australia, the US, Canada, Japan, Mexico and Argentina.
