HARLEM WEEK honors 50th anniversary of Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute

HARLEM WEEK is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI), which will present “Afribembé: Under One Sun” during the Harlem Day festivities on Sunday, Aug. 16.

Founded in 1976 by Dr. Marta Moreno Vega, CCCADI has spent five decades preserving and celebrating the cultures of the African diaspora through the arts. Before establishing the institute, Moreno Vega served as the second director of El Museo del Barrio. Today, CCCADI operates two locations in East Harlem: the CCCADI Firehouse on East 125th Street and the newer CCCADI Ilé Oyin annex on East 126th Street.

Throughout the year, CCCADI uses arts and culture as tools for advancing racial and social justice through workshops, lectures, international travel experiences, exhibitions, film screenings, training programs, performances, research, and advocacy.

“For fifty years, CCCADI has been an essential hub for Afro-Diasporic artistic and cultural life,” Executive Director Melody Capote said in a statement. “While rooted in our East Harlem community, CCCADI has served as a ‘living bridge’ connecting communities of African descent across New York City, the Americas, and the world.”

To commemorate its 50th anniversary, CCCADI has hosted a series of special events, including its current exhibition, “Jab, J’ouvert, Revelry and Resistance,” curated by Know Your Caribbean. The exhibition explores Carnival as a living expression of resistance, identity, and collective memory.
