*Years after her relationship with Idris Elba ended, K. Michelle is sharing how public discussion about the romance left a lasting mark on her.
During a recent appearance on the podcast “Club Shay Shay,” the singer spoke about the period when she and Elba were together, explaining that many people were unaware of the relationship while it was happening. According to Michelle, the two spent significant time together during an eight-month romance that largely remained out of the spotlight.
“We dated. We were together every day for about eight months. But because I never got online and was like, ‘This my man,’ people didn’t know,” she said, per MEAWW.
Once the relationship became a topic of public conversation, Michelle said she was caught off guard by the reaction. She recalled feeling judged by people who questioned her place alongside the actor and entertainer.
“They acted like I was ugly. They acted like I wasn’t good enough. Charlamagne said it was like turning wine into Arbor Mist,” she said, referring to radio personality Charlamagne tha God.
Michelle explained that those remarks were especially difficult to hear at the time. Looking back, she said the criticism affected her deeply and stayed with her.
“That hurt me. I’m a young Black woman, and you’re saying that I’m not good enough?” she said.
K. Michelle also shared that she provided Elba with an advance listen to one of her albums. He later contacted her, praising the project and expressing regret about the way things ended between them.
“I have nothing bad to say about him,” she said.
K. Michelle is now married to her longtime friend Dr. Kastan Sims, while Elba recently celebrated seven years of marriage with his wife, Sabrina.
