Matric exams 2026: How many days until finals begin?
The final stretch of a 12-year journey is fast approaching... when does the matric exams 2026 begin and end?

The countdown is officially on for South Africa’s Class of 2026. As today’s date is 14 September 2026, matriculants have just 29 days left until the National Senior Certificate (NSC) final written examinations begin on 13 October 2026.
MATRIC EXAMS SET TO BEGING IN JUST 29 DAYS
According to the Department of Basic Education’s official timetable, the main NSC exam period will run from 13 October to 26 November 2026, with papers sat in two daily sessions. These slots are 09:00 and 14:00. The very first paper on the schedule is Computer Applications Technology Paper 1 Practical, with Mathematics Paper 1 following shortly after in the first week.
For learners taking Life Orientation, Performing Arts, or Visual Arts and Design, the exam season has technically already began. Visual Arts and Design practical assessments are already underway, running from 14 September to 13 October. Performing Arts practicals began back in August and continue through to 9 October. The Life Orientation common assessment task was written on 1 September.
This year’s exam season carries extra weight in the national conversation, since South Africa’s local government elections are scheduled for 4 November. This falls right in the middle of the NSC writing period. 4 November has been decalred an official public holiday in South Africa.
The Department of Basic Education has confirmed no exams are scheduled on election day itself, or on the days immediately before and after it, to accommodate schools being used as voting stations without disrupting matric candidates.
WHAT PARENTS AND LEARNERS NEED TO NOTE
With just over four weeks to go, education officials and tutoring bodies are urging matrics to move from general revision into focused, past-paper practice. This has been recommended particularly for high-weighting subjects like Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Accounting.
Provincial education departments typically run “Spring School” holiday programmes during the September break to give learners structured revision time. You can contact your provincial department or school directly to confirm whether one is running near you.
The Department of Basic Education has also flagged the usual pre-exam risks: fake timetables, leaked-paper scams, and dishonest “exam assistance” offers tend to circulate on social media in the weeks before writing begins.
Officials are urging learners and parents to rely only on the timetable and instructions issued directly by the Department or their school.
