MoHW warns of increased Dengue risk during rainy season

By Zoila Palma: The Ministry of Health and Wellness (MoHW) is reminding Belizeans that the rainy season increases the risk of dengue transmission, as stagnant water provides breeding grounds for the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

The Ministry explained that dengue can cause mild to severe illness and, in some cases, can be fatal. Common symptoms include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, and skin rash, while severe cases may involve bleeding or difficulty breathing. Residents experiencing symptoms are urged to seek medical attention immediately.

The Ministry is encouraging residents to take steps around their homes, businesses and communities to eliminate mosquito breeding sites. These measures include emptying, covering or removing containers that collect water, disposing of discarded tires, bottles and cans, keeping drains and surroundings free of vegetation, garbage and debris, and using mosquito repellent as directed.

The Ministry said it continues to work with communities, local authorities and partners to strengthen dengue surveillance and vector control activities across the country. It emphasized that dengue prevention is a shared responsibility and urged residents to remain vigilant, particularly during the rainy season.
