MTN Nigeria has marked 25 years of commercial operations in Nigeria, reflecting on its role in the country’s telecommunications development and the expansion of digital connectivity.
MTN Nigeria CEO and Managing Director Karl Toriola said the company began commercial operations 25 years ago at a time when telecommunications access was limited for many Nigerians. He recalled that people often queued at public telephone booths and centres, travelled long distances to deliver messages and, in some cases, waited weeks for letters to arrive.
Today, more than 90 million people are connected to the MTN network, according to Toriola. However, he said the significance of the milestone goes beyond the number of subscribers, pointing to the businesses, families, students, creators and industries that have benefited from expanded connectivity.
“Businesses have been built. Families have remained close across great distances. Students have gained access to knowledge. Creators have found audiences around the world,” Toriola said, highlighting the wider economic and social impact of telecommunications infrastructure.
He said MTN has continued to invest and adapt alongside Nigeria through periods of progress and significant challenges. Toriola also acknowledged the role of governments and regulators in opening and guiding the development of Nigeria’s telecommunications sector, while recognising the contribution of MTN’s employees, board, partners, shareholders and communities.
The CEO particularly thanked MTN Nigeria’s customers, saying their trust and patronage had enabled the company to expand its investments in communities through the MTN Foundation. These initiatives have supported areas including health, education, youth development and economic empowerment.
As MTN Nigeria enters its next phase, Toriola acknowledged that significant connectivity gaps remain. He said millions of Nigerians still need access to reliable, affordable and inclusive digital services, making greater digital inclusion a key priority for the company’s next chapter.
“The next chapter must bring more people into the digital economy and create even greater opportunities for Nigeria’s young and growing population. The 25th anniversary therefore comes as both a celebration of MTN Nigeria’s contribution to the country’s telecommunications evolution and a renewed focus on expanding digital access and opportunities. Toriola concluded the anniversary message by saying: “We’ve come a long way. And we are only getting started.”
