SASSA pensioner reveals what payment date changes cost him

For more than five years, July Miya has relied on the Older Persons Grant to survive. But it’s not the R2400 amount that’s causing him the most grief lately; it’s when that money actually lands in his account.

Miya from the Free State says the shifting payment schedule has thrown his finances into disarray. In his own words, shared through The South African’s SASSA survey: “The 1st of each month payments were the best day, this thing of changing dates now and then has caused misery to most recipients, cancelling most of our insurances and losing free electricity coupons due to no fixed date for payments.”

The consequence has been direct and painful. Insurance premiums that once debited reliably now miss their mark. Free electricity coupons tied to specific payment windows have lapsed. For a retired man supporting between three and five dependants on a single grant, those losses aren’t small print, they’re the difference between staying covered and starting over.

Grant runs out before the month does

Miya rents privately and uses his grant primarily for food and groceries, but he admits it “regularly” fails to cover his household’s basic needs. He confirmed his money runs out before the month ends, leaving his family exposed during the final stretch of each cycle. Rising food prices have only sharpened that shortfall, and Miya lists the cost of living as his single biggest financial concern.

Despite the disruption, Miya rates his overall experience with SASSA as “very good,” noting his application and payments have otherwise been straightforward. He receives his grant directly into his bank account and lives under five kilometres from SASSA offices, sparing him the transport costs many rural recipients face.

Pensioner wants one thing to change

Asked what single change would most improve his life, Miya didn’t hesitate: increase the grant amount. He also revealed he was never informed about additional support programmes that might have eased the pressure, a gap he says he simply didn’t know existed.

Miya’s story reflects what millions of grant-reliant South Africans face when administrative shifts collide with already-stretched budgets, proof that even small calendar changes can carry heavy consequences for those who live by the grant date.
