Shiweda murder fugitive arrested at Oshakati

A fugitive wanted by the police in connection with the murder of late prosecutor Justine Shiweda has been arrested.

The suspect is also one of five people allegedly linked to the robbery of about N$56 000 near Bank Windhoek at Oshakati on Friday.

His arrest comes amid allegations that he had been sending threatening messages to journalists and police officers investigating Shiweda’s murder.

According to a source familiar with the investigation, some of the alleged threats were sent from a South African cellphone number.

The suspect was arrested on Monday at a girlfriend’s house at Ekuku at Oshakati.

He was allegedly preparing to flee to the Erongo region when police apprehended him.

The fugitive is alleged to have received N$4 950 from Petrus Shikwaya, another accused in the Shiweda murder case, about 10 minutes after Shiweda was violently attacked at Ondangwa in October last year.

During his bail application, Shikwaya allegedly told the court that the money had been sent on the instructions of his uncle, Abner Mateus, who is alleged to be the mastermind behind the murder.

A police source says the suspect is expected to face charges relating to the alleged escape from Ondangwa, before subsequently appearing in connection with Shiweda’s murder and the separate Bank Windhoek matter.
