Somalia army rejects reports of helicopter crash in Baidoa

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s army on Tuesday dismissed media reports claiming one of its helicopters had crashed in the town of Baidoa, calling the accounts unfounded as tensions continue to rise in the region.

In a statement, the military said the reports, circulating on social media and local outlets, were baseless and appeared aimed at undermining public confidence in the country’s security institutions.

Authorities in Southwest state also rejected suggestions that their forces had shot down a Somali military helicopter, reinforcing the army’s denial.

The denials come amid mounting strain in Southwest state, where the federal government has increased deployments of troops and weapons in an effort to remove the regional leader from power, heightening an already delicate political standoff.

Helicopters, some provided by international partners to support medical evacuations and the transport of critical personnel and equipment, have been used to move troops, officials and supplies into the region. The deployments have concentrated forces in key towns, intensifying pressure on regional authorities as the situation edges closer to a potential confrontation.
