MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s representatives to the East African Community Parliament were sworn in Monday after the regional bloc’s court reinstated them, bringing closure to a legal dispute that had challenged the process through which they were selected.
Opponents had argued that the selection was marred by corruption and lacked transparency, prompting the case that temporarily halted the lawmakers’ installation.
Somalia’s ambassador to Tanzania, Ilyas Ali Hassan, said the swearing-in of the legislators reflects the country’s growing influence within the East African Community. He also thanked Somalia’s leadership for steering the country through what he described as a difficult moment.
Somalia joined the East African Community in late 2023 after meeting all the requirements for admission into the regional economic bloc.
Hassan expressed hope that the newly sworn-in lawmakers will work diligently to advance Somalia’s interests within the bloc and help position the country as a gateway connecting Somalia more closely with the region.
