Fresh details of an ongoing case involving a syndicate of medical doctors and police officers linked to the murder of Ondangwa control prosecutor Justine Shiweda are deeply troubling.
The syndicate allegedly collaborated in fraud with medical doctors. They allegedly forged medical passports, stole official hospital stamps and facilitated fraudulent insurance payouts through fabricated or exaggerated medical conditions, channelling illicit proceeds through shell companies and bank accounts.
These revelations, reported by Namibian Sun, should jolt law-enforcement agencies and the health authorities into immediately investigating these syndicates.
Left unchecked, they will continue to prey on patients, defraud insurers and corrupt public institutions that vulnerable Namibians depend on.
It is deeply troubling that (some) doctors, entrusted with saving lives, are accused of conspiring to jeopardise their well-being.
Professional bodies have been silent – at least publicly – watching from the sidelines as the case unfolds.
We hope they are pro-active instead of waiting as syndicates reinvent themselves.
