UNISON has announced a series of picket lines outside Central Hill Day Centre next week as campaigners continue efforts to prevent the closure of Lambeth’s specialist dementia service.
Earlier this year UNISON members balloted for industrial action after the Labour-led council announced plans to close the day centre, which the union describes as Lambeth’s only specialist dementia service. Campaigners have argued that demand for dementia support remains high and that the closure would leave vulnerable residents and carers with fewer options for specialist care.
The union has announced the following picket line dates:
- Monday 1 June: 9am–11am
- Wednesday 3 June: 9am–10am
- Friday 5 June: 9am–11am
at Central Hill Day Services, 20 Lunham Rd, Norwood, London SE19 1AA
The Buzz understands that UNISON organiser Simon Hannah hopes to open discussions with Lambeth’s new Green-led administration regarding the future of the service, with further updates expected in the coming weeks.

However, while saving the centre was a focus for Greens during the recent local election campain, councillors are set to consider proposals to replace Lambeth’s cabinet system with a committee system at an Extraordinary Meeting of the Council on Monday 1 June.
So it remains unclear when the new administration will begin making substantive policy decisions at the Town Hall.
Background
- A petition launched to keep the service open has over 900 signatures.
