‘We’re being made to look like fools’ – Gayton fumes over Bafana visa debacle
Bafana Bafana's departure for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been delayed after visa complications prevented them from travelling to Mexico.
The South African Football Association (SAFA) has provided an update on Bafana Bafana’s travel arrangements to Mexico for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after the team’s departure was delayed by visa-related issues.
Bafana Bafana were scheduled to leave South Africa on Sunday morning to continue their preparations in North America ahead of the tournament.
Their trip however, was postponed after several players and officials were unable to obtain their visas in time.
In a statement released on Sunday, SAFA confirmed the setback.
“The South African senior men’s national team has experienced challenges regarding visas for some players and officials, and as a result the group could not travel to North America this morning as originally planned,” the association said.
Bafana Bafana unable to travle to World Cup
SAFA added that it is working around the clock to resolve the matter and ensure the team departs for Mexico City as soon as possible.
“We remain committed to ensuring that the team’s preparations for the tournament remain on track and, in the meantime, Bafana Bafana will continue to train in Johannesburg until departure.”
The association also confirmed that its Emergency Committee would meet on Sunday evening to discuss the situation, with a further update expected after the meeting.
Despite the disruption, Bafana Bafana are still scheduled to face tournament hosts Mexico at the Estadio Azteca on 11 June 2026 in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup.
The visa saga has drawn criticism from Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie, who expressed his frustration on social media.
“This travel and visa debacle is embarrassing and grossly unfair towards the players and coaching staff. I have informed SAFA that I need a report and action must be taken against those responsible for this mess. We are being made to look like fools,” McKenzie posted on X.
Bafana were set to play Jamaica on Wednesday in their World Cup warm up match.
