International health authorities are coordinating an emergency response following a suspected hantavirus outbreak aboard the expedition cruise vessel MV Hondius, where six cases of severe acute respiratory illness have been reported, including three deaths.
According to official updates released Monday by the World Health Organization and national health agencies involved in the response, one case aboard the vessel has been laboratory-confirmed as hantavirus, while additional suspected cases remain under investigation pending further laboratory testing and genetic sequencing.
One passenger is currently receiving intensive care treatment, while other affected individuals are being monitored as health officials continue their assessment of the outbreak.
The Netherlands-based cruise operator Oceanwide Expeditions is working alongside the WHO and multiple national health departments to manage the situation, including coordinating medical evacuations and arranging repatriation for deceased passengers.
The vessel, which departed from Ushuaia approximately three weeks ago, is currently anchored off the coast after local authorities denied permission for the ship to dock as a precautionary public health measure.
Health authorities in South Africa have been assisting in the emergency response by providing medical care to evacuated passengers transported to Johannesburg.
The WHO said the ongoing response includes a comprehensive public health risk assessment and coordination among affected countries to limit potential spread and ensure passenger safety.
What Is Hantavirus?
Hantavirus is a rare but potentially serious rodent-borne disease transmitted primarily through exposure to infected rodent saliva, urine, or droppings. Infection often occurs when contaminated particles become airborne and are inhaled by humans.
Health experts stress that hantavirus is not typically spread between people, and the overall risk to the public remains low.
Early symptoms commonly resemble influenza and may include fever, muscle aches, headaches, and fatigue. In severe cases, the illness can progress into Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), a life-threatening respiratory condition marked by acute breathing difficulties and fluid accumulation in the lungs.
Public health officials emphasized that containment and monitoring procedures are in place aboard the ship and that there is currently no indication of a broader public health threat.
Authorities continue to investigate the source of exposure on the vessel while awaiting additional laboratory results from suspected cases.
