The Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has said the FDH Bank Premiership will break for four weeks to give teams time to rest and pave the way for international engagements.
Sulom general secretary Williams Banda said in an interview yesterday that the second round will kick off on October 10.
This means that apart from champions Mighty Wanderers and Blue Eagles, who will meet in the last first round fixture on September 19, the rest of the teams will have at least a five week break.
The other 14 teams completed their first round fixtures last weekend, but the match between Wanderers and Eagles was deferred due to the Nomads’ involvement in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League first preliminary round fixtures against Tanzanian side Simba Sports Club.
Said Banda: “Teams will rest for two weeks while the other two weeks are for international fixtures.
“Be as that may, we will stick to the domestic calendar and finish the season in March 2027 as planned.”
FCB Nyasa Bullets acting chief executive officer (CEO) Albert Chigoga welcomed the arrangement saying: “Honestly its a unique recess for mid-season. Who would have thought that teams would stay for a month before the resumption of the second round?
“It is, however, understandable given that the break is coinciding with an international break.”
Masters FC CEO Kevin Moyo described it as a complex situation.
“But Fifa has introduced one long break to reduce so many breaks. Locally it has coincided with the transfer window which can affect the rhythm of our team as it was slowly gaining momentum,” he said.
Karonga United general secretary Ramsey Simwaka welcomed the arrangem,ent, saying it siots them fine.
“It’s OK with us. After all, some teams are having problems with their squads and the break gives them time to work on their challenges and come back stronger in the second round,” he said.
The current 2026/27 season kicked off in April.
