For nearly two years, South Africans held onto hope that Apollo would eventually find the kind of home his late owner, Judd Aron, always dreamed of for him… and this past weekend, that hope finally became reality.
Johannesburg, South Africa (26 May 2026) – The love Judd Aron and Apollo shared is not something you forget. If you drove through Fourways or Bryanston over the years, chances are you saw them together… standing at the robots, side by side, navigating life as a team.
Judd, with his kind smile, and Apollo are always close enough to touch him. Always watching him. Always loyal.
For many Joburgers, they became part of the rhythm of daily life. Familiar faces during school runs, traffic jams and busy mornings. And even though Judd had very little, the one thing nobody ever doubted was how deeply he loved Apollo.
When Judd passed away in January last year, it felt like an entire community was grieving alongside Apollo.
There was heartbreak and fear about what would happen to the dog who had never known life without his human. Over the months that followed, South Africans rallied around Apollo’s story. Stafford Rescue Africa stepped in, Lauren Mallet and her team opened their hearts to him, and thousands of people shared his story in the hope that somebody would eventually give him the soft landing he deserved.
But the months dragged on.
Apollo waited. And waited. And waited.
Even after all the shares, all the promises and all the comments saying, “I wish I could take him”, he still went to sleep in a kennel every night without his person beside him.
Until now. This past weekend, the story finally changed.
Apollo has finally found his home.

Lauren from Stafford Rescue Africa shared the update with Good Things Guy that so many people had been hoping for:
“For many years, Apollo and his beloved owner Judd were familiar faces on the streets of Fourways, Johannesburg. Despite living through incredibly difficult circumstances, the bond between them was undeniable, loyal, unwavering, and deeply moving to everyone who crossed their path.”
She explained how the Fourways community had loved both Judd and Apollo for years, stepping in wherever they could with food, blankets, kindness and support.
“Apollo was never just a dog on the streets… he was Judd’s family, protector, and best friend.”
After Judd’s passing, Apollo’s entire world shifted. Stafford Rescue Africa took him in, loved him through his grief, helped rehabilitate him and patiently waited for the right person to arrive.
And then, this past weekend, Leon Gouws walked through the doors. Only… Apollo wasn’t actually the dog Leon thought he was coming to meet.
“When Leon contacted Stafford Rescue Africa, he had a very different idea of the dog he thought he would adopt,” Lauren explained. “In his mind, he imagined a smaller breed perhaps a pug or one of the little dogs currently waiting at the kennels. But fate had other plans.”
Lauren and Kim decided to introduce Leon to Apollo first.
“The moment Leon met Apollo, everything changed.”
“It was love at first sight,” Leon said. “I don’t want to meet any more dogs.”
Within moments, Apollo… lovingly known as “Polly” by the Stafford Rescue team… had completely stolen his heart. But this story was always meant to happen this way. They were destined to meet.
Leon understands loss too.
Leon is a 33-year-old tattoo artist from Boksburg who has also experienced deep grief, having lost both of his parents. Reading his story alongside Apollo’s feels almost impossible to ignore. Two souls who know heartbreak. Two beings who know what it feels like to lose the people who anchored them.

Perhaps that’s exactly why the connection happened so quickly.
Outside of tattooing, Leon restores vintage cars and classic motorcycles… things with history, soul and stories etched into every scratch and scar. It somehow feels fitting that Apollo found his way to somebody who understands that broken things are still worthy of love, care and a second chapter.
And Apollo’s new life already sounds beautiful.
When Leon is working, his close friend and assistant Rudie helps care for Apollo, making sure he always has companionship, comfort and attention. Lauren says Apollo hasn’t just found an owner.
“He found his people. He found stability. He found love again.”
After years on the streets beside Judd, months of grief, and nearly two years of waiting for the right home, Apollo has finally found his retirement family… the kind of life Judd would have wanted for him all along.
“There is no greater feeling than knowing that the promise I made ‘Polly Boy,’ has finally come true,” Lauren shared emotionally.
“We love you, boy, and wish you and your new Dad Leon nothing but the absolute best life filled with your sloppy kisses and quirky little waggling tush!”
For everyone who followed Apollo’s story over the past two years, this was the update we were all waiting for. People worried about him, cried for him and shared his story over and over again, hoping the right person would eventually see it.
And now, finally, he gets to leave the heartbreak behind and step into something he has been waiting for. A family of his own again.
This is the ending Judd would have wanted more than anything else for his best friend.
