Banyana Banyana’s World Cup hopes dashed by Morocco defeat
Banyana Banyana finished fourth two years ago and scraped into the last eight this year.
Banyana Banyana’s dreams of a second consecutive appearance at a FIFA Women’s World Cup have been dashed.
The South African women’s football team was dumped out of the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in the quarterfinals by hosts, Morocco, in Rabat on Saturday night.
In a replay of the final of the 2022 edition which Banyana won, Morocco turned the tables, recording a two-one victory to book their spot at next year’s World Cup in Brazil.
It was a disappointing campaign for Banyana who won just won match and have been moving in the wrong direction since their first and only continental title four years ago.
They finished fourth two years ago and scraped into the last eight this year before they were sent packing.
It ends in defeat for Banyana Banyana in Rabat, not the result we wanted as we bow out of WAFCON 2026 with a 2-1 loss to Morocco#BanyanaBanyana#Banyana#ntswembunamanje#WAFCON26 pic.twitter.com/Rb7XszWjHk
