Celebrating Jamaica 64

As someone who lived abroad for many years, Tad Dawkins knows the feeling of celebrating his country’s independence day in a foreign land. His patriotism took on new meaning every August 6, when Jamaica marked its sovereignty.

On August 7, his company Tad’s International Record, released ‘Celebrating Jamaica 64’, a 17-song compilation album. Dawkins co-produced the songs with his son, Tad Dawkins Jr.

It is the fifth instalment in the series which contains songs by top acts.

The latest edition highlights Jamaica’s diverse musical culture — from revival/gospel, to dancehall and reggae songs.

“The objective was to curate a collection that truly reflects the richness and diversity of Jamaican music. We wanted a balanced mix of reggae, dancehall, lovers’ rock, gospel and conscious music, while showcasing both established favourites and songs that continue to resonate with audiences,” Dawkins explained. “The album also includes special selections such as Grampa Entatain’s ‘Khaki’ (on the popular ‘Hill And Gully’ Riddim) and the ‘Kukudoo Medley’, which serves as a tribute to the late Kukudoo and recognises the important contribution of revival gospel music to Jamaica’s musical heritage.”

Three songs from ‘Celebrating Jamaica 64’ were previously released. They are Duane Stephenson’s version of ‘You Have Caught Me’, originally done by The Melodians; Vybz Kartel and Mavado’s ‘Happiest Days’; and ‘World Peace’ by Brigadier Jerry.

There are also songs by Big Mountain (‘Voodoo’); Marcia Griffiths (‘Unconditional Love’) and Josey Wales (‘Heavenly Father’).

Dawkins lived in New York City for many years, playing drums in a band, and watching the economic growth of its sprawling Jamaican community. He also witnessed how his country’s culture influenced American music, fashion and cuisine.

He wants to express his love of country in productions like ‘Celebrating Jamaica 64’.

“My patriotism is reflected in the work we have done over the decades. Tad’s International Record has remained committed to investing in Jamaican music, Jamaican artistes and Jamaica’s creative industries,” Dawkins stated. “We have proudly operated from Jamaica while sharing our music with audiences around the world. Projects such as the ‘Celebrating Jamaica’ series are an extension of that commitment. They are our way of honouring our country’s rich musical legacy while ensuring it continues to reach new generations of listeners.”

Dawkins started his independent company in 1984. It has amassed a vast catalogue containing songs and albums by roots-lovers’ rock giants such as Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs and Johnny Osbourne, as well as instrumentals by saxophonist Dean Fraser, and the controversial Vybz Kartel.
