The Advocacy Academy and the Brixton Traders and Community Association are calling on residents, traders and supporters to a public meeting this Friday to discuss a community-led bid for Brixton’s iconic markets, after learning that unnamed investors are looking to acquire the site with plans that could see rents hiked and independent traders displaced.
Organisers say the corporate sale window has been narrowed from six months to just days, with bidding now ending on Monday 22nd June – giving the community less than a week to mount a counter-bid.
A petition backing community ownership has already gathered over 1200 signatures. It warns: “Private equity developers are now trying to buy Brixton Village and Market Row. This could mean the evicting of our local independent traders, hiked rents, and Brixton Market filled with faceless multinational chains.”
Organisers say local traders from the market are launching an emergency community counter-bid to bring the market into community ownership.
“We can either accept that the market will always be run by developers who don’t live here, don’t have any ties to the community, and only see our people as cash cows — or we do something about it,” they said. “For us, the choice is clear.”
The meeting is open to all. A lineup of speakers is to be confirmed.
