Designing a Beautiful Future One Build at a Time
Building for Resilience, Designing for Life
In a region where climate, craftsmanship, and client expectations intersect, Design Cayman has carved out a distinctive niche as a fully integrated design, construction, and development firm. Founded by architect Cindy O’Hara, the company has evolved over the past 15 years from a sustainable architectural practice into a multi-disciplinary operation that spans design, construction, procurement, and facilities management.
At its core, Design Cayman is driven by a simple but powerful philosophy: build to last. In the Cayman Islands—where hurricanes, flooding, and coastal conditions are constant considerations—this approach goes beyond aesthetics or even conventional sustainability. It is about climate resiliency, durability, and long-term performance. Every project is conceived with these principles in mind, ensuring that structures are not only visually compelling but also capable of withstanding the environmental realities of the region.
From its earliest days, the firm focused heavily on commercial and industrial projects, developing strong relationships with corporate clients and developers. Today, that foundation remains, with approximately 70 percent of its work still rooted in the commercial sector. However, the company has successfully expanded into high-end residential design, specializing in indoor-outdoor luxury homes that reflect both the lifestyle and environmental context of the Caribbean.
What truly distinguishes Design Cayman is its integrated business model. Alongside its architectural division, the company operates a construction arm, a procurement division established during the COVID-19 supply chain disruptions, and a growing development arm focused on delivering its own projects. This ecosystem allows the firm to manage the entire lifecycle of a project—from concept and design through construction and ongoing maintenance.
This “end-to-end” approach was born out of necessity. As O’Hara explains, the firm recognized early on that while it could control design quality, other elements of the construction process were often inconsistent. By expanding its services, Design Cayman gained greater oversight and accountability, ensuring that projects are delivered to the highest standards.
Equally important is the company’s commitment to long-term client relationships. Unlike firms that operate on a transactional basis, Design Cayman emphasizes continuity and trust. A significant portion of its business comes from repeat clients, many of whom have worked with the firm across multiple projects. This loyalty is built on transparency, communication, and a willingness to stand behind its work.

Every project, for example, includes a full year of post-construction maintenance. This ensures that any issues are addressed promptly and reinforces the firm’s commitment to quality. Clients can also extend this relationship through the company’s facilities management services, creating a seamless transition from construction to long-term care.
Sustainability is not treated as an optional feature but as a foundational design principle. Buildings are oriented and engineered to manage heat, humidity, and salt exposure, with careful attention paid to mechanical systems, building envelopes, and material selection. Solar readiness is standard, even if clients choose not to install systems immediately, ensuring that projects remain adaptable to future needs.
One of the firm’s most notable achievements is its work on the Government Administration Building in George Town—the first LEED-certified building in the Cayman Islands. Designed as both a functional office space and a hurricane-resilient structure, the project exemplifies the firm’s approach to sustainable, practical design.
Innovation also plays a key role in the company’s operations. From advanced design software and 3D modeling tools to drones for site analysis and client presentations, technology is integrated throughout the workflow. However, O’Hara is quick to point out that these tools are only as effective as the expertise behind them. The firm continues to rely on hands-on collaboration, including sketching and interactive design sessions, to ensure that client visions are fully realized.
Supply chain management has become another area of expertise. With limited local manufacturing, Design Cayman sources materials globally, maintaining relationships with suppliers in North America, Europe, and Asia. A strategic partnership in Singapore allows the firm to oversee quality control and pre-assembly processes, reducing risk and ensuring consistency for custom components.

Despite its global reach, the company remains committed to supporting local suppliers and contractors wherever possible. This balance between local engagement and international sourcing enables the firm to deliver both quality and efficiency across its projects.
Looking ahead, Design Cayman is placing increased emphasis on its development arm, bringing together investors, partners, and internal expertise to deliver projects from the ground up. This shift reflects a broader industry trend toward integrated development models, where design and construction are closely aligned from the outset.
At the same time, the firm remains firmly rooted in its core values. Client relationships continue to guide its growth, with each new service offering emerging as a response to client needs rather than a top-down strategic decision. This client-first mindset has been the driving force behind the company’s evolution—and remains its greatest strength.
In a competitive and demanding market, Design Cayman stands out not just for what it builds, but for how it builds: with integrity, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to delivering lasting value.
