Former Minister Miria Matembe Arrested

Former Minister of Ethics and Integrity, Miria Matembe, has been arrested after reportedly going into hiding for five days.

Her arrest was confirmed by the Commander of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Matembe’s arrest comes barely two hours after the reported arrest of Eunice Musiime, Executive Director of Akina Mama wa Afrika, and Sarah Bireete, Executive Director of the Centre for Constitutional Governance (CCG).

Musiime is a prominent women’s rights advocate who has led Akina Mama wa Afrika, a pan-African feminist organisation, in advancing gender equality, leadership development, and social justice across the continent.

On June 24, 2026, security agencies raided Matembe’s home at around 10:00 a.m. However, the former legislator was not found at the residence, having reportedly left before the security team arrived.

Sources close to the incident say the operatives conducted a thorough search of the premises, ransacking parts of the house before leaving with several unspecified items. It remains unclear what was taken or whether an official warrant had been issued prior to the operation.

Details about the circumstances of her arrest and her current whereabouts remain unclear.

This is a developing story.
