Horse found dead in Lord’s Bank as resident alleges ongoing animal cruelty

A resident of Lord’s Bank Village is calling for action after a horse was found dead in the BDF housing area along Nim Li Punit Street, in what the resident alleges is part of a troubling pattern of animal abuse in the community.

According to the resident, who contacted Breaking Belize News on Saturday morning, young men in the area have been taking people’s horses and abusing them. The resident alleges the animal found dead was mistreated until it died overnight, and photographs shared with this newsroom show the horse lying in a grassy area with severe visible injuries.

The allegations have not been independently verified, no official cause of death has been determined, and no individuals have been identified in connection with the animal’s death.

Cruelty to animals is an offence under Belizean law, and the death of a working animal is also a real economic loss for families who depend on horses for transport and labour. The circumstances described, if accurate, would warrant investigation by police and the Belize Agricultural Health Authority, which also has a role where carcass disposal raises public health concerns for nearby residents.
