International Youth Day 2026 highlights skills, opportunities and shared aspirations

By Zoila Palma:  Nearly 1.3 billion people between the ages of 15 and 24 are living around the world, making today’s youth population the largest generation of young people to date. According to the United Nations, the demographic distribution of youth is expected to shift significantly, with 69 percent projected to live in low- and lower-middle-income countries by 2050, compared with 59 percent in 2025.

The UN also projects that the youth population in high- and upper-middle-income countries will decline by nearly 24 percent between 2025 and 2050. Meanwhile, injuries remain a major concern for young people, accounting for nearly half of all youth deaths in low-income countries and more than half of youth deaths in upper-middle- and high-income countries.

For International Youth Day 2026, the UN Youth Office is emphasizing the importance of future-ready skills as young people navigate a rapidly changing world.

These skills include digital and artificial intelligence literacy, as well as human-centered abilities such as critical thinking, empathy and resilience. The UN is also calling for more equitable access to skills development while recognizing young people as co-creators of education and policy, rather than simply recipients.

This year’s theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” highlights the shared goals of young people despite differences in their communities and countries.

 Young people continue to seek dignity, opportunity, meaningful participation, decent work, quality education and a sustainable future.
