Migrant Workers’ Voice Named Humanitarian NGO of the Year at 2026 Wezesha Awards 

Migrant Workers’ Voice (MWV), a leading Ugandan civil society organisation dedicated to the protection and empowerment of migrant workers, has been awarded the  Humanitarian NGO of the Year 2026 at the Wezesha Awards, organised by Kenya’s Wezesha Group.

The award was presented during the official ceremony on  8th August 2026  at the  PrideInn Plaza Hotel, Signature Mall, Mombasa Road, Nairobi , held under the theme:  “Youth Power: Protecting Democratic Gains, Advancing Justice and Promoting Open Governance.”

MWV was recognised for its sustained humanitarian interventions on behalf of vulnerable migrant workers, including emergency repatriation assistance, free legal representation for victims of trafficking and labour exploitation, and community-based development programmes that support returning migrants and their families.

Kayonde Abdallah , Executive Director of Migrant Workers’ Voice, accepted the award and dedicated it to the workers and families the organisation serves.

“This award is a reflection of the resilience and courage of migrant workers who face immense challenges in search of opportunity,”   Kayonde said. “It is also a call to action for governments, partners, and communities to do more to protect those who leave home to build a better future. We will continue to stand with them, every step of the way.”

The Wezesha Awards 2026 brought together leaders from government, the private sector, development agencies, civil society, and youth networks to celebrate excellence in civic participation, accountability, innovation, peacebuilding, and community service. The organisers emphasised that young people are central to advancing democracy, justice, and open governance across Africa.

MWV’s recognition highlights the critical role of migrant-focused organisations in shaping regional migration policy, safeguarding human rights, and delivering humanitarian support to those in crisis. The organisation has committed to using the award to strengthen its programmes, expand its reach, and deepen collaboration with regional and international partners committed to safe, orderly, and dignified migration.
