Morogoro Open set for late August tee-off

DAR ES SALAAM: MOROGORO Gymkhana Club is set to host the Morogoro Open Golf Tournament 2026 from August 28 to 30, with the three-day championship expected to attract golfers from across the country for one of the season’s premier amateur events.

According to the club’s Golf Captain, John Kilian, preparations are in top gear to ensure the tournament tees off successfully.

Kilian said the championship will be played in the strokeplay format, with the flagship Division A competition contested over 54 holes, giving elite amateur golfers another opportunity to compete for valuable World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points.

The national tournament is being organised in collaboration with the Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) and is recognised by The R&A, further underlining its importance on Tanzania’s golfing calendar.

Registration has been opened for six competitive categories to cater for golfers of different skill levels and age groups.

Besides the premier Division A event, Kilian said players will also compete in Division B and C, Juniors, Seniors and Ladies categories, ensuring broad participation while promoting the continued growth of golf in Tanzania.

The Morogoro Open has steadily established itself as one of the country’s most anticipated amateur championships, bringing together experienced golfers, emerging talents and promising juniors on the challenging Morogoro Gymkhana Club course.

The event is also expected to provide golfers with an opportunity to improve their national standings while competing in a tournament recognised for WAGR points.

Kilian noted that this year’s tournament has attracted sponsorship from Mkwawa Leaf Tobacco Limited and Alliance One, whose support will help ensure successful staging of the annual event.

“We are grateful to all our sponsors for their invaluable support, which has made it possible for us to organise this annual tournament smoothly,” Kilian said.

With only weeks remaining before the championship, golfers are expected to step up preparations as they chase honours across various categories.

Particular attention will be on the 54-hole Division A competition, where the country’s leading amateur golfers are expected to battle for the title and valuable WAGR points in what promises to be another exciting edition of the Morogoro Open.
