When you’re starting from scratch, moving scams can make a huge transition even worse. Some scammers advertise at extremely low rates and then increase the rate once the items are moved; some will refuse to deliver an item until additional payment is made. Understanding what to watch for could help you protect your house, your finances, and your sanity.

When it comes to scams and fraud, many U.S. adults are worried. AARP Research found that their typical worry rating about scams and fraud was 7.1 on a scale of 1 to 10, and 30 percent of those surveyed were worried they would become victims of such. And considering that moving is often a major life transition, this fear is amplified.

That concern grows when your furniture and memories are in someone else’s truck. Consumer advocacy groups report an annual increase in complaints about “fake” moving companies and unexpected charges. In addition to causing stress, a poor move can also cause financial problems and disrupt budgets and timelines for Black women who are working, raising children, and relocating.
