West Budama County South MP Jacob Markson Oboth-Oboth has been elected Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament after securing a commanding win in a high-stakes vote held on Monday at Kololo Independence Grounds.
Oboth-Oboth cruised to victory with 441 votes, far ahead of National Unity Platform’s Paul Mwiru (Jinja South East Division), who garnered 60 votes, while Democratic Party President General Norbert Mao, also the Laroo-Pece MP, polled 15 votes. Three ballots were declared invalid.
The election, presided over by Chief Justice Flavian Zeija, attracted 519 Members of Parliament and was conducted by secret ballot in line with parliamentary procedure. President Yoweri Museveni also witnessed the proceedings.
Oboth-Oboth replaces Bukedea Woman MP Anita Annet Among, whose tenure ended amid an ongoing corruption probe that has dominated political discourse in recent weeks.
Veteran Lawmaker Takes Charge
Born on April 13, 1971, Oboth-Oboth is a senior member of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) with long-standing experience in parliamentary affairs.
He previously served as State Minister for Defence and chaired key committees in the 11th Parliament, including Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Rules, Discipline and Privileges, and Natural Resources.
New Era in Parliament
The Speakership is one of the most powerful offices in Uganda’s legislative arm, tasked with presiding over proceedings, enforcing order, and steering national debate in the House.
Oboth-Oboth now assumes office at a politically sensitive moment, with Parliament expected to handle major governance and accountability matters in the new term.
His landslide victory cements the ruling party’s dominance in the House and ushers in a new leadership phase for the 12th Parliament.
