Prof Mkumbo commends THRDC’s Human Rights Grant initiative

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Minister of State in the President’s Office–Planning and Investment, Professor Kitila Mkumbo, has commended the Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC) for launching the Human Rights Grant Project, saying the initiative will help increase access to financial resources for human rights protection and advocacy activities in the country.

Professor Mkumbo made the remarks in Dar es Salaam during the launch of the initiative, where he also contributed Sh1 million to support its implementation.

He said the launch of the project demonstrates THRDC’s innovation and commitment to establishing sustainable sources of funding that will enable civil society organisations and human rights defenders to carry out their responsibilities more effectively.

“This is an important step towards building a strong financing system for human rights activities in the country. The government continues to value the contribution of stakeholders who support efforts to strengthen the rule of law, human rights and inclusive development,” Professor Mkumbo said.

According to THRDC, the Human Rights Grant Project aims to increase the availability, accessibility and sustainability of financial resources for the implementation of human rights projects in Tanzania through the coalition.

The initiative will be implemented through three main strategies: mobilising resources from development partners and traditional donors; building partnerships with the private sector and promoting philanthropy; and strengthening the capacity of grassroots human rights organisations in business development and impact investment.

The project was launched alongside THRDC’s 15th General Assembly, which brought together members, development partners, human rights defenders and various leaders to discuss the future of human rights protection and advocacy in Tanzania.

THRDC said the initiative seeks to reduce dependence on external funding sources and establish sustainable financial mechanisms that will enable human rights organisations and defenders to continue carrying out their responsibilities effectively.

The coalition said investment in sustainable funding mechanisms is essential to ensuring the continued implementation of human rights protection and advocacy activities for the benefit of communities and the nation at large.
