SIB pushes new data law to modernize Belize’s statistical system

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Statistical Institute of Belize held a one day session in Belize City on Tuesday to brief data producing agencies on the draft National Data and Statistical Systems Act, 2026.

Senior representatives from agencies within the National Statistical System attended the meeting at the Best Western Belize Biltmore Plaza, where they reviewed the key provisions of the proposed law and gave feedback before it is finalised.

The SIB currently operates under the Statistical Institute of Belize Act, but no comprehensive legislation governs the broader National Statistical System. The draft Act was developed to close that gap.

The United Nations Development Program provided technical support for the drafting process as part of the KOICA funded Enabling of Belize’s Statistical System project.

The Act covers the production, sharing, protection and use of data for statistical purposes, and is aimed at improving cooperation between agencies that produce data.

Agencies examined the provisions against their own operations and made recommendations, which were presented in plenary. Those comments will be examined as the draft law moves toward finalisation.
