By Zoila Palma: On August 9, 2026, the People’s United Party (PUP) held a convention in Corozal to elect its mayoral and councilor candidates for the 2027 municipal elections.
Three-term Mayor Rigo Vellos faced newcomer Shajarie Rogers and her team in the mayoral contest.
Vellos emerged victorious, securing the party’s nomination to contest the upcoming municipal elections.
Vellos garnered 1,799 votes and Rogers got 1,175.
Councilor candidates elected during the convention are Hugo Gonzalez, Miguel Montalvo, Rodolfo Narvaez, Baldemar Pech, Otoniel Riverol and Marleni Tapia.
