Trump Lost on Birthright Citizenship, So He’s Trying a New Strategy

WASHINGTON (AURN News) — President Donald Trump signed two new executive orders Thursday targeting birthright citizenship, weeks after his previous effort was struck down by the Supreme Court.

Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump defended the move, saying, “This was done right after the Civil War. This was for the babies of slaves.”

The orders mark a new attempt to narrow birthright citizenship after the Supreme Court ruled against his previous effort.

The first order blocks federal agencies from recognizing birthright citizenship in specific cases, including children of certain foreign government officials, cases involving immigration fraud or commercial surrogacy and some births in U.S. territories such as American Samoa.

The second directs the State and Homeland Security departments to deny visas, revoke travel authorization and even deport foreign nationals believed to be traveling to the United States primarily to give birth.

But many of these restrictions already exist under current federal policy. What’s new is the language involving foreign government officials and U.S. territories, which tests categories the Supreme Court did not fully define in its ruling.
