United Nations Population Fund Youth camp empowers 97 young Belizeans to become community leaders

By Zoila Palma:  Ninety-seven young people from Belize, Stann Creek and Toledo districts have strengthened their leadership, advocacy and life skills through the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Department of Youth Services (DYS) “Let’s Be Leaders!” Youth Training Camp.

The four-day residential program was delivered across three weekends, providing participants with practical knowledge and skills aimed at building their confidence and preparing them to take on leadership roles and advocate for positive change in their communities.

Throughout the camp, participants took part in interactive educational sessions, leadership training and cultural activities in a safe and inclusive environment.

The program encouraged young people to build meaningful connections, strengthen their self-confidence and develop the ability to make informed decisions about their lives and futures.

Mackeva Westby-Neal, Acting Liaison Officer for the UNFPA Office in Belize, said the initiative represents an important investment in Belize’s youth. She emphasized that providing young people with knowledge, confidence and agency can help nurture future leaders who can contribute to a more equitable and resilient Belize.

The training camp forms part of the “Let’s Be Clear” campaign under the “Leave No One Behind: Reduction of Adolescent Pregnancy” project, funded by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the Government of Ireland through Irish Aid.

The initiative promotes access to accurate, age-appropriate information on sexual and reproductive health, gender equality and healthy relationships, while encouraging young people to become advocates for their own wellbeing and that of others.
