A well-known motorcyclist from George, Basie Gerber, tragically died following a crash at a traffic circle near the Mediclinic George on Monday.
He was 78.
The incident occurred at the intersection of York and Steenbras streets, where Gerber – affectionately known as “Oom Basie” – was riding his three-wheeled motorcycle (trike) when it collided with a tree.
May have suffered a blackout
According to the George-Herald, it’s believed Gerber may have suffered a blackout, possibly linked to low blood pressure, shortly before the crash.
Gerber’s Jack Russell, Jasper, who frequently accompanied him on rides, was with him at the time.
Members of the public took the dog to the Garden Route SPCA, where he was cared for before being collected by Gerber’s son, Chris.
The dog will now remain with family in Calitzdorp.
Mentored younger riders
Gerber was widely regarded as an experienced motorcyclist with extensive knowledge of riding and motorcycle mechanics.
Over the years, he mentored many younger riders and was a familiar presence among local motorcycling groups, often joining fellow enthusiasts on rides despite not being formally affiliated with a club.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been finalised and are expected to be announced in due course.
He is survived by his brother, two sisters, his son, daughter and daughter-in-law.
