Here at Word In Black, we’re hosting an event every two weeks this fall. 

Our goal: encourage more in-depth conversations, identify solutions and foster collaboration around issues that shape the Black American experience.

SEPTEMBER

Clearing the Air: Fighting Air Pollution in Black Communities

9/2/2026, 6-7:15 p.m. ET

An American Lung Association study found that almost half of all Americans live in communities with unhealthy ozone and particle pollution levels. People of color are more than twice as likely to live in these areas.

In partnership with The Washington Informer, Word In Black will host a discussion with innovators working to curb pollution and improve the air in Black communities. 

We’ll also hear from the reporters behind The Informer’s ongoing solutions journalism series focused on Washington, D.C.’s air quality, which received an “F” rating in 2025.

What’s on Your Plate Part II – Black Farmers Roundtable

9/16/2026, 6-7:15 p.m. ET

As the U.S. continues to navigate the widespread Cyclospora outbreak that sickened thousands over the summer, Word In Black will host the second edition of the virtual food series, “What’s on Your Plate.” 

Word In Black’s Head of Content Joseph Williams will sit down with Black farmers from around the country to discuss our broken food safety system, how to find quality food and why Black farms matter.

We will also share findings from Word In Black’s national survey exploring Black America’s relationship with food.

Aging in the Black Community

This virtual discussion explores the intricacies of aging, including how seniors can stay active, combat loneliness and embrace the later stages of life.

The event is part of Word In Black’s collaboration with editorial partners featuring a series of stories and guides around aging in the Black community.

Word In Black will convene Black business owners, economic leaders and supporters in Baltimore to identify challenges and opportunities in ownership.

Religion Hot Topics Part II

Word In Black Religion and Social Justice reporter Rev. Dorothy Boulware will host her second roundtable about the Black church. 

During this edition, she will convene a panel of church leaders from around the country to discuss how the church handles divorce and whether seminaries truly prepare leaders for ministry.

Over the summer, Word In Black asked if AI is Hurting Black America. This time, we’re exploring how AI influences our mental health.
