Belize Coast Guard catches three foreign nationals illegally fishing at Gladden Spit using drone technology in Friday night operation

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Three foreign nationals were intercepted and detained on Friday night after being caught engaging in illegal fishing activities near Gladden Spit in Belize’s southern waters. The arrests were made during a joint maritime enforcement operation that highlighted the growing effectiveness of drone technology and multi agency collaboration.

The operation was conducted through the combined efforts of the Belize Coast Guard, the Fisheries Department, the Southern Environmental Association, and the Wildlife Conservation Society. Together, these agencies coordinated a successful interdiction that resulted in the detention of three individuals operating illegally within one of Belize’s most important and protected marine zones.

According to the Belize Coast Guard, drone technology played a crucial role in detecting the illegal activity and enabling the swift response that led to the arrests. The operation also underscored the strong leadership of the Coast Guard’s 2nd Fleet in actively patrolling and safeguarding Belize’s southern maritime domain.

Gladden Spit is one of Belize’s most significant marine protected areas and serves as a critical spawning aggregation site where fish gather to reproduce. Illegal fishing in this area poses a direct threat to the health of Belize’s marine ecosystem and the sustainability of the country’s blue economy.

The Coast Guard used the operation to send a clear message to anyone considering illegal activity in Belizean waters: Belize’s marine protected areas are under constant surveillance. Illegal activities will be detected, and they will be dealt with accordingly.
