BWSL pushes back against claims surrounding infrastructure contracts

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize Water Services Limited (BWSL) has issued a public statement rejecting what it describes as inaccurate claims regarding water infrastructure contracts and procurement practices.

In a press release issued on June 12, BWSL stated that several projects recently mentioned in public discussions, including the Sarteneja Project, the Hopkins Project, and the Santa Familia Extension Project, are not BWSL projects.

According to the utility company, those initiatives are rural water infrastructure projects that fall outside of BWSL’s service area and are neither procured nor managed by the company.

BWSL also addressed claims involving FAST Construction Ltd., stating that the company was awarded only one contract by BWSL: the San Ignacio River Gallery Project, valued at approximately BZ$1.4 million.

The utility said the contract was awarded through an openly advertised bidding process conducted in accordance with procurement requirements established by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), and the World Bank.

BWSL noted that those international institutions independently oversee procurement processes to ensure contracts are awarded fairly, transparently, and in the public interest.

The company said it remains committed to transparency, accountability, and compliance with established procurement policies and procedures.

The statement comes amid growing public scrutiny over government contracts and procurement practices across various sectors.
