Fire breaks out on Mount Kilimanjaro again.

Fire has erupted again on Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak on the African Continent, located in Northern Tanzania.

Reports from the Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA), an institution which is the custodian of Kilimanjaro, say the flames were first detected on the lower slopes of the mountain on the 3^rd day of September 2026.

“The fire broke out in the Kikelewa ward within an area where the Kilimanjaro National Park (KINAPA) borders the Rombo District,” the statement from TANAPA explains.

But while efforts to contain raging flames are ongoing it is still not yet known if the fire outbreak was caused by human activities or among the natural calamities.

A team of firefighters has been dispatched to the affected area and will reportedly work with members of communities in the surrounding village to combat the flames.

On the other hand, tourism activities, including mountain climbing are unaffected and continue as usual, at least according to the statement from TANAPA corporate and communication office in Arusha.

In 2023 when Kilimanjaro national Park was celebrating its 50^th Anniversary China pledged 2.5 Billion/-, to assist Tanzania in the country’s efforts to combat disasters especially fire outbreaks atop Mount Kilimanjaro.

The Chinese envoy to Tanzania, Ambassador Chen Mingjian presented the USD 1 Million Cheque to for natural disaster management, during the climax of the celebrations to mark 50 years of Kilimanjaro National Park held at the Marangu entry gates.

But around this time in the first week of September 2023 a similar fire incident was reported at Kilimanjaro and by the time it was quelled, the flames had destroyed 17 acres of vegetation around its slopes.

Again, a year earlier, a fire occurred at Kilimanjaro​ in October 2022.

​Similar flames of fire broke out on the 21st of October 2022 razing across the Southern West Zone which never used to experience outbreaks in the past.

Later, there were additional series of fire episodes on the mountain, with the second case occurring on 20 October 2022, in Udetu and Samanga parts, on the Rombo escarpments.

On October 29, 2022 another fire erupted near River Karanga, Umbwe and Baranko areas, while on October 30, 2022 it spread to Mandara, Kasoko near the Crater on the Marangu route sections.

During the 2022 disaster, more than 34.2 Square Kilometers of Vegetation on Kilimanjaro were destroyed by fire, which lasted for several days.

Kilimanjaro National Park covering an area of some 75,575 hectares protects the largest free standing volcanic mass in the world which forms the highest mountain in Africa, rising 4,877 meters above the surrounding plains to 5,895 meters at its summit peak.
