Flight class breakdown: Choosing the right cabin for your needs

When it comes to achieving the best flying experience, there are a lot of factors to consider. These include choosing an airline, flight routes, seating options and meals, among others.

Flight classes – that is, the cabin classes – can also have an impact on how you travel from Point A to Point B.

Each class caters to different budgets and preferences. All airline carriers feature varying levels of amenities and services within these classes, which shapes the overall convenience and comfort of your journey.

THE FOUR MAIN FLIGHT CLASSES

Typically, major airlines offer four main flight classes: Economy Class, Premium Economy, Business Class and First Class.

Most folks will readily know the difference between Economy Class and First Class. But what makes Premium Economy better than Economy Class? How does Business Class compare to First Class?

It can be confusing, especially if you’re unsure about splurging extra cash on an upgrade to a cabin class that might offer minimal benefits.

FLIGHT CLASS BREAKDOWN

Here’s everything you need to know about the four flight classes, starting with:

1. ECONOMY CLASS

Economy Class is the most affordable flight class on the plane. It’s the preferred option of budget-conscious travellers or those travelling domestically. Generally, Economy Class passengers are the last to board.

Seats are typically narrow and feature less legroom. When it comes to baggage allowance, services and extras – such as in-flight food and Wi-Fi – different airlines have their own set of rules. For example, where one might offer complimentary snacks, another might charge you for these.

2. PREMIUM ECONOMY

Premium Economy is the slightly more sophisticated cousin of Economy Class. For frequent travellers, it presents more comfort and, depending on the airline, more benefits such as free amenities and better food.

“Main perks include wider seats and more legroom, though at a much lower price than Business or First Class,” says KAYAK. “Premium Economy may be separated from other seats by a partition and usually offers seats in a more desirable part of the plane (such as near the front).”

3. BUSINESS CLASS

Business Class is the epitome of special treatment. For working professionals and those wanting to treat themselves to a zhuzhed-up travel experience, there are a lot of perks to enjoy.

These include priority boarding, lounge access, wider seats, increased baggage allowance, lie-flat seats, high-quality meals and a good high-tech inflight entertainment system. You’ll receive luxury amenity kits, which contain items such as earplugs, eyemasks, skincare products and bedding.

4. FIRST CLASS

Imagine a high-class hotel room in the sky, complete with a dining experience that would rival that of a restaurant. This is what you can expect if you stay in a First Class cabin.

“Passengers [have]… access to dedicated check-in lines and exclusive lounges,” says KAYAK. “First Class passengers also board first, and while offerings vary vastly depending on the airline, typically you can expect seats that flatten fully, multi-course, celebrity chef-curated meals with wine pairings, excellent service, and special privacy features like sliding doors and noise-cancelling headphones.”

Depending on the airline, you can check in up to three bags, make use of private showers and even receive loungewear.

It’s an opportunity to fly in style, though you will have to pay more than a pretty penny to do so!

TAKE FLIGHT HOW IT SUITS YOU

Whether you’re a first-time traveller, journeying solo or in groups, or you’re looking to try something new, it’s good to know what flight class options are available to you and how they best serve your needs.

Take stock of your needs, budget and travel itinerary, as these will help you choose the most suitable class. Again, different airlines have different rules regarding what these classes offer, so conduct the necessary research beforehand.

Happy flying, folks!
