As the war for the Iron Throne intensifies in House of the Dragon Season 3, few characters find themselves under more pressure than Jacaerys Velaryon. Once viewed as the heir learning the ropes of leadership, Jace has evolved into a critical political and military figure for Team Black. But according to actor Harry Collett, that newfound responsibility comes with growing frustration.
During an interview with Black Girl Nerds, Collett discussed how Jacaerys is struggling with feeling overlooked despite proving himself capable time and time again.
“Jace wanted to get put to good use,” Collett explained. “I feel like he was being seen and not heard in previous seasons, and now he just feels like he’s being no use and no one’s listening to him.”

Throughout Season 2, Jacaerys demonstrated impressive diplomatic instincts, helping secure alliances and strengthening support for Queen Rhaenyra’s claim. However, as Season 3 begins, he finds himself increasingly sidelined at a moment when he believes he is ready to contribute more directly to the war effort.
“He knows he’s right because you’ve got the whole of the Black Council listening to him and agreeing with him,” Collett said. “And then his own mother, Rhaenyra, is just pushing him to the side in his eyes.” While Rhaenyra’s actions stem from a desire to protect her son, Jace sees things differently. Having already proven himself politically, he believes it’s time to move beyond council chambers and take action on the battlefield.
“Obviously, she’s trying to keep her son safe,” Collett continued. “But for him it’s like he’s ready. He can do this. He’s done the political side. Now he needs to go and do things.”
That sense of impatience is heightened when he sees others being entrusted with responsibilities that he desperately wants.
“Baela’s being sent off to go do things and not him,” Collett noted. “And he’s like, ‘Do you not think I’m capable?'”
The frustration runs even deeper given the questions that have followed Jacaerys throughout his life. As rumors regarding his parentage continue to shadow him, self-doubt begins to creep into his thinking.
“Is it because I’m a bastard?” Collett said, describing the thoughts running through Jace’s mind. “All these things are running in his mind.”
It’s a compelling evolution for a character who has often been one of the more measured and thoughtful members of Team Black. Rather than simply serving as Rhaenyra’s loyal heir, Season 3 appears poised to explore Jace’s growing desire for independence and recognition.

As tensions rise and the Dance of the Dragons escalates, Jacaerys’ struggle may become one of the season’s most fascinating storylines. He’s no longer content to sit quietly at the council table. He wants to lead, fight, and prove his worth — not just to the realm, but to the people closest to him.
For Jace, the question isn’t whether he’s ready. It’s whether anyone else is willing to let him prove it.
Season 3 of House of the Dragon premieres June 21st on HBO and is available to stream on HBO Max.
